HydraFusion: How GitHub Copilot Orchestrates Multiple AI Models at Once

GitHub has just expanded HydraFusion -- a Copilot feature that used to live only in the CLI -- to VS Code and the Copilot app. It's not a new AI model; HydraFusion is an orchestration system that picks and combines several models at once for a single coding task.

What HydraFusion is

In the Copilot model picker, HydraFusion looks like any regular model option. Behind the scenes, though, it evaluates the capability signals a task needs -- reasoning, code generation, debugging, or tool use -- then picks the most efficient workflow to hit the targeted quality bar. The feature is a research preview and was originally only available in Copilot CLI, before being expanded to VS Code and the GitHub Copilot app on September 30, 2026.

Three workflow patterns

HydraFusion runs one of three patterns, depending on what the task needs:

Benchmark results

GitHub compared HydraFusion against Claude Opus 5 through offline evaluation. On TerminalBench 2.1, quality improved by 4.9 points with an estimated 67% lower cost. On DeepSWE, there was a substantial cost reduction, though the exact figure wasn't published.

Availability

HydraFusion is now accessible in VS Code (version 1.140 or newer, or VS Code Insiders) and the GitHub Copilot app, for Pro, Pro+, Business, and Enterprise plans -- for the latter two, admins need to enable the preview feature through organization settings first. Since it's still a research preview, the feature can change at any time.

The bigger picture

HydraFusion's arrival tracks with the broader rise of AI coding agent adoption. As of late September 2026, independent research from Amplifying.ai recorded around 32.5% of the public pull requests it sampled as agent-generated (including Copilot, Claude Code, Cursor, and others) -- though some of that figure is an estimate, since not every agent is reliably detectable through explicit PR attribution.

Frequently asked questions

Is HydraFusion a new AI model?

No. HydraFusion is an orchestration system that picks and combines existing models, not an AI model trained from scratch.

Is HydraFusion free?

HydraFusion is available to Copilot Pro, Pro+, Business, and Enterprise subscribers -- not the free tier. For Business and Enterprise, an organization admin needs to enable the preview feature first.

How is HydraFusion different from Copilot's Auto mode?

Auto picks a single model for each request. HydraFusion picks a workflow (single, cascade, or critique) and can coordinate multiple models within one conversation turn.
